Inviews Episode 10 - Jaylin Vinson

Jaylin Vinson, Composer, Winner YCC 2022 (Division 2). In this Inview he discusses his musical journey with TNM's Alex Sesenton.

Jaylin Vinson (b. 2002) is a composer and violinist based in Oklahoma City. He is currently studying music at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Jaylin uses his music to respond to his physical and intellectual interactions with the universe. Topics include admiration of the natural world, critiques of human society, and embracing his ethnic origins.

 

Inviews Episode 9 - Josh Henderson

Composer/Instrumentalist - Winner of YCC 2022 (Division 1), Josh Henderson is known for carving out a reputation in Jazz, Rock, Hip-Hop, and Country-Fiddle for his dynamic performances. He has served as music director for the Emmy award-winning Damien Escobar (of Nuttin' But Stringz), and in this role has performed at a number of events across the globe including a performance at the 2013 Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball hosted by Russell Simmons and honoring Barack Obama. A founding member of the cross-genre ensemble, Warp Trio, he has led the group on hundreds of concerts and University residencies throughout the United States, as well as on international tours.

 

Inviews Episode 8 - Zac Zinger

In this episode, we speak with Young Composer Competition 2021 Division 1 winner Zac Zinger. Zac is an award winning composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist with an experience in a wide variety of mediums. He has written for film, commercials, and video games as well as a plethora of ensembles.

Zac shares his advice for young composers just starting out, the music that inspires him, and all about the process of creating music for video games.

Jerome Kitzke has described himself as being as much a storyteller as a composer, and that description makes sense. Throughout his music there is a strong dramatic, narrative, theatrical component. His music has been performed by the Milwaukee Symphony, the New Juilliard Ensemble, Essential Music, Present Music, Earplay, Zeitgeist, Guy Klucevsek, Margaret Leng Tan, ETHEL and Kathleen Supové.

Inviews Episode 6 - David Crowell

David Crowell is a composer and instrumentalist (saxophones, guitar) based in New York City. His compositions juxtapose intense rhythmic and melodic counterpoint with still, starkly spacious textures. Transformative experiences in the natural world are a source of inspiration, expressed through the interplay of composed and improvised passages, rhythmic and melodic layering, and a stylistic diversity that traverses the worlds of contemporary classical, jazz, and popular music. His music has been released on New Amsterdam, Innova, National Sawdust Tracks, Coviello Classics, and Skirl.

David’s newest piece, “Cloud Forest,” played by the Argus Quartet, will premiere on the Tribeca New Music festival on April 10th.

 

Inviews Episode 5 - Earl Maneein

Earl Maneein is a violinist/ violist/ composer/ arranger whose personal work stands at the somewhat unlikely crossroads of Western Classical music, Heavy Metal, and Hardcore Punk. His three main musical projects include Black Heart Sutra, Resolution15, and string quartet SEVEN)SUNS. All three projects explore the role of the violin in extreme music in various forms.

We spoke to Earl about his upcoming TNM performance with Seven)Suns, his musical journey, and his favorite artists of today (spoiler alert: Doja Cat holds a prominent position.)

 

INVIEWS EPISODE 4 - JEREMY AJANI JORDAN

On this week’s episode, we speak with composer and pianist Jeremy Ajani Jordan. Critically acclaimed, “a clear technical virtuoso”, “a rare talent”, and “a true Wunderkind,” Chicago born Jeremy Jordan burst onto the music scene at age 9 playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in a live televised performance.

Jeremy composes solo piano music, chamber music, orchestral music, and electronic music. We speak to him about his most recent album ‘For Flint’ which featured several original jazz compositions and raised money to purchase clean water for families affected by the Flint Water Crisis.

 

Inviews Episode 3 - Will Healy

TNM Host Alex Sesenton talks to Composer/Pianist, Will Healy. Noted for his "lushly bluesy" sound and "adroitly blended... textures" (New York Times), he is the artistic director of ShoutHouse, a collective of hip-hop, jazz, and classical musicians. After playing trumpet in an Afrobeat band for a few years, he grew interested in collaborating with performers from many corners of the New York music scene. In addition, he is an accomplished pianist specializing in Bach, with a repertoire that includes the complete Goldberg Variations and Well-Tempered Clavier.

Will speaks to us about his reasons for playing piano, how he keeps a work/life balance, and even shares his hidden talent!

 

Inviews Episode 2 - Majel Connery

Majel Connery is a vocalist, composer and former musicologist who makes electro-art-dream-pop with repressed classical influences. Her work has been called “superb” by the New York Times and “thoroughly Schubertian” by the Wall Street Journal. In 2019 she wrote songs about porn, periods, and sad fish for five episodes of Radiolab’s “Gonads” series.
